Bonn, Germany – The world’s leading climate science body, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), is set to play a pivotal role at the 62nd session of the Subsidiary Bodies of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), taking place in Bonn from June 16 to 26, 2025. This high-level gathering is a crucial step in shaping the agenda and decisions for the upcoming COP30 summit, scheduled for November 2025.
The Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) will convene to address pressing climate issues, with the IPCC providing the latest scientific insights to inform negotiations and policy directions.
IPCC’s Key Engagements at Bonn
The IPCC’s participation will be marked by several high-profile events and presentations:
June 17: The session will open with remarks from IPCC Secretary Abdalah Mokssit, who will address delegates at the joint opening of SBSTA 62 and SBI 62. His speech is expected to underscore the importance of science-driven policy in tackling the climate crisis.
June 17: Later that day, IPCC Chair Jim Skea will deliver a keynote address at the 17th Session of the Research Dialogue. The event will also feature a presentation by the Co-Chairs of Working Group I, highlighting the latest findings on climate science and their implications for global action.
June 18: The IPCC will host a side event titled “Informing Climate Action: The Science & Cross-Cutting Topics of IPCC’s Seventh Assessment Report.” Scheduled for 10:30 am in the Berlin Room, this session will delve into the critical scientific themes and recommendations emerging from the IPCC’s ongoing work.
June 20: The agenda continues with a special adaptation-focused event, mandated by the IPCC and chaired by the SBSTA Chair, as part of the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) discussions. This session, set for 10:00 am in the Chamber Hall, will explore strategies for building resilience in the face of escalating climate impacts.
Setting the Stage for COP30
The outcomes of these meetings in Bonn will be instrumental in shaping the decisions and commitments to be made at COP30, the UN’s flagship climate conference, later this year. With the IPCC’s Seventh Assessment Report providing a scientific foundation, negotiators and policymakers will be better equipped to address the urgent challenges of climate change.
As the world looks to Bonn for leadership and direction, the IPCC’s contributions are expected to drive home the message that robust, science-based action is essential for a sustainable future.
